Account and storage guide

How to connect your Web Markups account.

Authorize the installed extension through webmarkups.com, confirm the account connection, and keep local capture as the default until you explicitly choose Cloud.

Quick answer: Open More in the Web Markups toolbar, choose Account & storage, and complete sign-in on webmarkups.com. Confirm the extension connection on the website. A connected account does not upload anything by itself.

Before connecting

  • Create and verify a website account, or sign in to an existing account.
  • Use the official Web Markups Chrome extension.
  • Keep the extension connection page open until it reports success or a clear denial.
  • Never enter your Web Markups password inside an extension popup or webpage overlay. Account credentials belong on webmarkups.com.

1. Start the connection from the extension

  1. Open Web Markups on a regular webpage.
  2. Open More.
  3. Choose Account & storage.
  4. Complete the website sign-in flow if prompted.
  5. Review the connection request and choose Connect extension.

The website and extension use a bounded authorization flow. Do not copy authorization codes, browser tokens, or callback addresses into messages or third-party forms.

2. Confirm the account state

Return to the toolbar and reopen Account & storage. A verified Pro entitlement is determined by the server; a client-side label or URL parameter cannot grant Pro. A Free account remains Free until the current subscription is verified.

3. Choose local or cloud storage

Downloads

The default destination. Screenshots and recordings save locally through Chrome Downloads.

Downloads + Cloud

Available to a connected verified Free or Pro account after you explicitly select Cloud for the next capture.

Annotations

Stay in local extension storage. Connecting an account does not synchronize or upload them.

4. Save one capture to cloud storage

  1. Open the camera arrow menu.
  2. Select Connect cloud if the account is not connected, or select the connected cloud control.
  3. Confirm that the destination reads Downloads + Cloud.
  4. Take the screenshot or finish the recording.

The Cloud choice applies to one capture and then resets to Downloads. A local copy is still created. Keyboard shortcuts also reset to local-only instead of reusing previous upload intent.

Connection troubleshooting

The website says the connection was denied

Return to the extension and start a fresh connection. Do not reuse an old result page or callback address.

Cloud still asks me to upgrade

The updated extension supports 1 GB of cloud storage on Free accounts. Older extension versions may still show the Pro-only cloud control. Check for an extension update. Pro capture features still require a current server-verified entitlement.

The extension ID is unsupported

Install the official Chrome Web Store version. Historical unpacked IDs are not accepted by the production connection flow.

The service is temporarily unavailable

Local annotation and capture can continue. Retry the account check later rather than repeatedly reconnecting.

Privacy boundary

Connecting an account authorizes account status checks; it does not authorize automatic media uploads. Web Markups does not upload page URL, hostname, page title, or annotation objects as media metadata. Review every capture before choosing Cloud or sharing the downloaded file.
