Quick answer: Use Ctrl/Command+Shift+7 for a visible-tab photo, +8 for an area photo, +9 to start or finish recording the current tab, and +0 to choose a tab and area for recording. Chrome may leave a shortcut unassigned when it conflicts with another extension.
Default Web Markups shortcuts
Visible-tab photo
Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+7
macOS: Command+Shift+7
Selected-area photo
Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+8
macOS: Command+Shift+8
Current-tab recording
Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+9
macOS: Command+Shift+9
Selected-area recording
Windows/Linux: Ctrl+Shift+0
macOS: Command+Shift+0
What each shortcut does
- Visible-tab photo: activates Web Markups if needed and saves a local PNG of the current visible webpage.
- Selected-area photo: opens the existing rectangular area selector. Confirm Capture or press Escape to cancel.
- Current-tab recording: starts recording the tab where the shortcut was invoked. Use the same shortcut again to finish the active recording.
- Selected-area recording: opens Chrome's browser-tab chooser, then lets you position the recording frame. If a recording is already active, it finishes that recording instead of starting another.
Keyboard capture is always local-only. A previous Cloud selection is not treated as consent to upload a keyboard-initiated capture.
Change a shortcut in Chrome
- Open
chrome://extensions/shortcutsin Chrome. - Find Web Markups.
- Select the edit control for the command you want to change.
- Press a new key combination that Chrome accepts.
- Return to a regular webpage and test it.
Chrome owns shortcut assignment. Web Markups cannot override a browser or operating-system conflict.
Shortcut troubleshooting
Nothing happens
Check whether Chrome shows the shortcut as assigned, reload the webpage, and confirm Web Markups has site access. Shortcuts cannot inject the toolbar into protected browser pages.
The wrong extension opens
Another extension may use the same combination. Assign a different shortcut in Chrome's extension shortcut settings.
A recording is already active
Web Markups allows one recording session at a time. Finish or cancel the current session and wait for saving to complete.
I expected a cloud upload
Shortcuts deliberately start local capture. Open the capture menu and explicitly select Cloud for the next capture when using a connected Pro account.
